Body, Trace, Memory
Show Curated at the Eight Floor Gallery, NYC "The human mission on earth is to remember." Henry Miller, Remember to Remember. Since the beginnings of mankind, certain moments have significantly guided our spiritual progression and been encoded on our collective memory; one of which was the appearance of art as a means of expression. Since them artists have been fascinated by the reflection of their own image, as made evident by its predominance in their work. Today this fascination is even more prevalent, as the body becomes the only tangible "place of refuge" left in our lives. With the decline of religious practices, a lack at interest in the mythical origins of the universe, and the extreme industrialization of each natural, social, and cultural space, the body emerge as the only "space" where we can still recognize and express ourselves. We are caught between once familiar spaces which no longer provide sanctity and new technology which hurtles us into boundless yet sterile virtual space. Within the microcosm of our own bodies, we travel inward as if in refusal to communicate anything other than our own reflections. Is this alienation or narcissism? The surrounding physical world, the world within us, the intimate, the sense of creation, the breath of life, the unconscious, the will to transcend death, empty space, and loneliness; the desire to exist within one's art; those matters are the subject of this exhibit.
